Pink Eye

Pink eye is usually associated with an infection of the human eye, while some people, like pet owners, are aware that pink eye can also affect cats and dogs, fewer realize that pink eye can affect farmyard livestock animals like sheep, goats and cattle.

The disease affects livestock primarily in the summer months which are often warmer, and the increased temperature seems to encourage swarms of flies around the animals, and flies spread diseases!!

The flies seemingly can infect the animals by the transfer of toxic substances which affect the eye cornea and surrounding eye membranes, in the animals.

n  Pink eye can affect either one eye or both eyes in the animal infected.

It is entirely possible for a new born baby to have pink eye. The condition could be caused by a reaction to any antibiotics given at birth, ( remember that individuals can exhibit different reactions to antibiotics, and indeed to infections!) or it may have been resulted from an infection carried by the mother in her birth canal. If the new born shows signs of any redness in its lower, inner eyelids, in either one or both eyes, and is wanting to continually rub the eyes with its tiny hands, then it is a good sign that baby has conjunctivitis or ‘pink eye’.

Any eye infection or inflammation can be a cause of annoyance and discomfort to the sufferer.

Pink eye or conjunctivitis is a very common eye infection which affects the transparent membrane (conjunctiva), which covers the white eye ball, and both the upper and lower eyelids.

There is another eye infection which has similar symptoms to pink eye, called Blepharitis, and the two conditions are often confused. Since the treatments for the two infections can vary slightly it is important to differentiate between the two infections in order for them to be correctly treated.

Pink eye is very prevalent in cattle and is a highly contagious disease of bacterial origin, although it is non fatal, it has major impact on the economics of the cattle industry worldwide.

In the USA it is estimated that over $200 Million are lost annually through the loss of milk production, cattle weight and for treatment of the disease alone.

The Main Causes of Pink Eye in Cattle.

a). The bacterial pathogen Moraxella Bovis is the main infector.

b).However, other organisms, which include Mycoplasma, Achoplasma, and Chlamydia, although viruses, can either add to the bacterial infection or make the cattle more prone to secondary infections.

There are three main types of bacteria which cause eye infections including the all too familiar condition known as pink eye. The bacteria can be picked up by any person who is in contact with any places where these relatively common pathogens are present, then if the hands are unwashed, and the eyes or face touched, the bacteria are transferred to the eye, resulting in pink eye infection.

The three main bacteria which cause pink eye are as  follows.

Streptococcus. This common bacteria lives on the skin, in the mouth, the stomach intestines and the respiratory system. Most people have experienced or heard of a ‘strep’ throat, this condition is caused by the streptococcus bacteria which also directly infects the eyes and causes pink eye or conjunctivitis

The condition of pink eye, apart from its medical name of conjunctivitis, is also commonly referred to as ‘Madras Eye’. The eye becomes inflamed and reddens due to an infection of the transparent membrane (conjunctiva).

Pink eye is uncomfortable and extremely itchy, on occasions it may also be painful. If the symptoms of pink eye can be recognized, it can be the key point in both diagnosing and treating the infection while still in its early phase.

Some Common Signs of Pink Eye Infection.

a) Redness of the Eye. Medically know as Hyperemia, despite the term redness, viral conjunctivitis causes a pink colour to the eye, rather than red. Pink eye can also be accompanied by a sore throat and runny nose. Excess tears may be shed from the eyes, along with a feeling of grittiness and itchiness.

Pink eye will affect cattle more frequently in the warmer temperatures of the summer season. Many flies are active at this time along with other pink eye causing agents, like the eye irritant dusts from hay, pollen and the grazing grasses of the cattle.

Any outbreak of pink eye amongst the cattle can have serious economic consequences for the farmer in terms of both milk and weight loss in the affected animals,  and therefore early treatment for the condition must be sought.

The earlier, the better,! is important for the treatment, any treatments given before the eyes of the cattle tend to close or become cloudy and ‘blue’ will yield promising results and improvement.

When the owner of the cat observes the signs of pink eye in the animal, it is recommended that a visit to a veterinary doctor be arranged, as soon as possible, any delay in the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of the condition, could have serous consequences for the cat, including possible loss of sight.

If a person is showing symptoms of pink eye and visits the doctor, how can the doctor readily diagnose whether the infection causing the pink eye is of viral or bacterial origin, and so be able to prescribe the correct treatment?

By far the most common cause of viral pink eye is the adenovirus which is associated with about ninety percent (90%) of all virus conjunctivitis case. It is important that the physician be able to ascertain the direct cause, because even though both the viral and bacterial infections tend to be self limiting, they both are different in the way they express themselves in terms of the degree of contagiousness and the complications they can cause.
