The symptoms of allergic pink eye are commonly associated with the eyes being swollen, sore, watery,  with redness in the inner eyelids, but itching is the most common sign of allergic conjunctivitis. If severe itchiness is not present, then it is unlikely that the person is suffering from any kind of allergy.

SAC or seasonal allergic conjunctivitis is caused by the pollen of grass and ragweeds, these act as seasonal triggers, whilst PAC, or Perennial allergic conjunctivitis is common all year round, being caused by feathers, dust mites and animal dander. SAC is the most common allergy.

Allergy sufferers usually experience SAC during the Spring and Autumn seasons, and often notice severe eye itching, excessive eye watering and a feeling of burning. PAC normally occurs throughout the year, and the symptoms are less severe than for the seasonal allergy SAC.

How is the Eye Allergy Diagnosed?

The attending doctor will try a variety of typical medicines to positively identify the eye allergy. Depending on the positive reaction to one kind of medicine, and the failure to react to another will aid the doctor in giving a correct diagnosis and may even cause the doctor to search for a fresh diagnosis.

Is there a Treatment for Pink Eye Allergy?

When the doctor has completed her/his diagnosis and is satisfied that the source of the allergy has been positively identified, the patient will be advised about the substance causing the allergy and told how to avoid situations which will trigger off an allergic reaction.

Some patients may get relief by using cold compresses, and eyewashes, but more commonly medication will be recommended, such as oral anti-histamines, and eye drops, some of these oral anti-histamines include Claritin which is available over the counter, and Zyrtec, Clarinex, and Allegra, which need a prescription.

Over the counter eye drops are easily obtained and include Visine, and the decongestant Visine-A
